Hosting
There is one technical requirement for all Internet marketing efforts. That is the need for a web hosting. To make any information available on the Internet, it must first be added to a a server. Servers store, and of course serve, information to the Internet. Storing information on a server is commonly called web hosting. Hosting a website, web 2.0 properties, or other Internet marketing artifacts requires a combination of equipment and technical knowledge.
Rather than buy servers and hire in-house technicians, the Internet is full of third party web hosting companies. These companies already own the servers. They have already hired the necessary resources. Most of them have even created systems that allow you to manage your website with little technical knowledge.
Few of these hosting companies are non-profit. They expect to be compensated for their services and the use of their resources. Most of the time, this compensation is experienced in the form of an annual hosting fee to the company. However, some hosting companies have taken unique approaches to compensation. These unique approaches allow companies to use some hosting services without the associated hosting fees or at least at a significantly reduced rate.
Examples of unique hosting compensation plans:
- Placing ads on the hosted website to generate revenue instead of charging hosting fees.
- Offering reductions in hosting expenses when the company acquires other services like web development.
- Reducing the cost of hosting in exchange for placing a link to the hosting company’s website on the hosted website.
When choosing a host provider, it is important to remember that not all providers are created equally. Each one of them has very unique features. For instance, some hosting companies will only host certain types of Internet technology. Others will only allow a set amount of site visitors per month. Etc.. When considering a hosting provider, it is important to do so as part of a larger Internet marketing plan.
